ORANGE BEACH, Alabama — A boost in tourism has increased city expenses on the beach, and officials said they plan to raise condominium rental fees to cover the added costs of cleanup, lifesaving and other services.

Orange Beach City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a proposal to raise business license fees for the owners of rental condominium units from $85 to $130 a year.

Mayor Tony Kennon said the increase would raise about $200,000 a year.

“That would help cover what we spent on the beach,” he said.

The total number of Baldwin County beach visitors in 2011 could top 5 million for the first time, according to a report by Gulf Shores/Orange Beach Tourism. Kennon said those increased numbers come at a time when Orange Beach has reduced the number of city employees by more than 60 in the last three years.

“We had tremendous numbers on the beach this year,” Kennon said. “And it took tremendous numbers to maintain the beach.”

The mayor said the amount of litter collected by city workers this year also increased with tourist numbers.

“You would not believe the number of chairs, the number of tents that we had to haul off the beach, and it’s not our beach. That’s all state or private property,” Kennon said after the meeting. “We also started the beach patrol, which has been a tremendous success as far as lifesaving.”

Kennon said city officials spoke with local property owners associations about the need for an increase, and most owners understood.

“I think they see the effort, the time and what we’re having to do, and they recognize we cannot continue to go without a funding source,” Kennon said.

At the council work session, where the increase was proposed Tuesday night, no one in the audience or council spoke out against the proposal.

Councilwoman Pattisue Simpson asked Clara Myers, city finance director, to prepare a list of city services, such as litter removal and restroom cleaning, provided on the beach that could be funded with the money.

“There’s a lot of different things that we do on the beach that could be tied to this $200,000 and would help us justify asking people for what we need,” Simpson said.

Myers said the proposed increase would bring Orange Beach’s fees in line with those charged in other areas.

“The recommendation is to raise it to what Gulf Shores is, which is $130, as opposed to the $85 that we charge,” she said.

Myers said that if the council wants the increase in place for 2012, the ordinance needs to be passed at the upcoming meeting so the change can be included on fee notices going out in December.

Perdido Key Beach Renourishment project about to get under way

 Dredging Today – USA: Perdido Key Renourishment About to Begin: Gulf Islands National Seashore and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are expected to begin a sand-renourishment project on the south shore of Perdido Key next week.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of December.
Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown said the purpose of the project is to:
– Restore beach that has been lost to erosion through storm action and active shoreline processes.
– Relocate sand deposited within the Pensacola Pass navigational channel.
– Restore the sand that erodes from the island, which is vital to barrier island function and longevity.
The renourishment project with sand taken from the Pensacola Pass channel will be placed along a two-mile segment of shoreline near the eastern end of Perdido Key, park officials said.
The sand is expected to be similar to the existing island sand in grain size, texture and color. In time, the sand placed in what’s called the swash zone –- the near-shore area and up to an elevation of approximately 3 feet near of the sand berm — on the beach will be indistinguishable from the sand already there.
The public may notice unusual concentrations of sea birds that will flock around the work site because the sand slurry discharged from the dredge pipes will include aquatic organisms. The initial discharge will appear grayish or blackish until the finer materials settle out into the water column leaving behind the white sand for which the area is known.
The operation will involve dredges that will remove sand from the borrow area and pump it onto shore through 30-inch pipes. The pipes will place slurry of sand and water on the beach where bulldozers and other construction equipment will be used to place the sand.
Operations will be conducted 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the project is completed. Floodlights will also be used at night to illuminate the project areas. For public safety purposes there will be fencing and personnel on site to restrict access in the active project areas to authorized personnel only.

 The Gulf Coast Powerboat Association is hosting Thunder on the Gulf 2011 on Orange Beach, AL.   The event is rated as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast according to the Southeast Tourism Society. This years event will be held October 6th – 9th and will be BIGGER and BETTER THAN EVER! The beautiful beaches of Orange Beach, Alabama will once again host the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) World Championships.

This year Race Village will be at the State Park Pavilion. Race Village will be open to the public daily from 10 am – 8 pm. 

 On Saturday October 8th there will be live entertainment at Race Village from Noon until 4 pm.  There will be shuttles running from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to all racing venues.  Saturday evening at 6 pm there will be a Boat Parade from Race Village at the State Park Pavilion to Main Street at the Wharf. The parade will wind around the Wharf and end in front of the new Orange Beach Event Center where race fans can take pictures of the boats and get autographs with the race teams. Following the boat parade there will be a Gala in the Event Center featuring entertainment by the Tip Tops, a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar!

VIP Passes will give race fans free access to Race Village and a special viewing area from the Hospitality tent located at the Island House Hotel where you can enjoy food and libations on Friday and Sunday from Noon until 4pm. The VIP Pass will allow race fans exclusive access to a special viewing area at Cobalt the Restaurant (www.cobaltrestaurant.com). All four days fans can watch the cranes “SPLASH” the race boats in the Wet Pits at Caribe Resort (www.caribe-resort.net) from this special viewing area. AND THAT’S NOT ALL!!! Group Announces plan for $7 Billion Toll Road and Railroad from Orange Beach AL to Tennessee

ORANGE BEACH, AL. — A York, Pa., company issued a release today announcing the plans to build a new “300-mile rail and road transportation complex from the vicinity of Orange Beach to the Tennessee state line.”

The company’s release also says “the unprecedented project will begin development in the fall of 2012 with the construction of a four-lane limited access toll road from Orange Beach, Ala., to the area of Loretto, Tenn.”

Well, not exactly.

While the Island was abuzz for a while Tuesday morning after the release, the actual southern end of the ambitious project is slated to be in Mobile.

Ameri Metro is pleased to announce that it’s wholly owned subsidiary GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION & INFRASTRUCTURE INC. has been given a 7 billion dollar contract by Alabama Toll Facilities, Inc (ATFI) to construct a toll road on the western part of the state.  The story on their website states that the project will create 14,000 new construction jobs.

Stolen Plane from Gulf Shores disappears in the Gulf

Apologies for the afternoon Spam Attack

I just saw this on Al.Com, and couldn’t resist, apparently a Plane was stolen from Jack Edwards Airport this morning and it flew west into oblivion.  It supposedly disappeared 100 miles south of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico.  Which leads me to pass out these words of Wisdom……  when leaving your plane at Jack Edwards Airport in Gulf Shores, Take the Keys and Lock the Doors!!

DO planes have keys?
