Baldwin County ranked No. 6 for corporate expansions among micropolitan areas
Published: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 2:53 PM Updated: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 3:22 PM
Site Selection magazine has ranked Baldwin County as the No. 6 micropolitan area for business expansions in 2010, counting 10 corporate expansions and relocations in the county last year.
The Thomasville/Lexington N.C. area was ranked first among micropolitan areas with 26 projects. Scottsboro, Ala., was among five areas that tied for 20th with five projects. Micropolitan areas are typically rural counties with more than 50,000 people.
Robert Ingram, president of the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance, said that a $7 million, 20-job expansion at Ascend Performance Materials in Foley and a $6 million, 25-job project at Saunders Yachtworks in Gulf Shores were among the county’s most significant in 2010.
“Most of what we had were local companies expanding, which is good,” Ingram said. “If local companies are doing well, that means they’re happy with their workforce and they see improving sales.”
Texas was the No. 1 state with 424 projects, while Louisiana was No. 3 with 347. Neither Alabama, with 78 total projects, nor Mississippi, with 41 total projects, made the top 10 among states.
Chicago was No. 1 among metro areas with more than 1 million residents, while New Orleans was No. 10. Baton Rouge, La., was No. 1 among metro areas with between 200,000 and 1 million residents, while Lake Charles, La., was No. 1 among metro areas with fewer than 200,000 people.

Deluna Fest 2011 Sets Dates and Expands to Four Days
The Deluna Fest organizers announced big news today, they have set their dates for 2011, they have added a new partner, they have added more stages and they have expanded to four days.
The 2011 dates are October 13 thru 16 2011, The October 13 shows will be a VIP only event. (Get your wallet out, cause you won’t want to miss it)
The new partner is Gulf Breeze-based Innisfree Hotels, owner and operator of the Hampton Inn, Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front and the new Holiday Inn Resort on Pensacola Beach. The plan is to create a resort destination festival.
They are expanding to Six Stages in all, two directly on the beach at each end of the festival site and several other stages to feature regional and local acts. Additional performers will appear on Pooldecks of each resort.
Apparently all of these details are still up to a vote by the Santa Rosa Island Authority, a preliminary vote is scheduled for today at 5pm. A final vote will be held March 9th, 2011.
More Deluna Fest details:
Early bird, three-day passes go on sale to locals only April 5, through local venues to be announced. Early bird tickets will be made available online on April 12.
VIP packages go on sale starting March 15 online.

Lineup announcement is expected late in May.

Earthquake in Gulf Shores

Earthquake in Gulf Shores.
Last year we have the worst disaster known to mankind via BP and the Oilspill…. and let me tell you that was no where on the Radar.
Now Guess what…Oh honey we had an EARTHQUAKE.
Yeah you know the kinda thing that happens out in Cali or somewhere near the ring of fire?? Talk about off the RADAR.
Now the Good News, NO TSUNAMI!! or we would have had water running down our street.
I swear I was working on website and my screens started shaking sometime after 5pm….problem is that happens alot in this Townhome we live in!
OK actually it was 10 miles offshore.
Here are some of the stories I have been able to find on it so far. It Looks to me like it was down off of the end of West Beach or halfway down the Fort Morgan Peninsula.
From Channel 5 WKRG:
3.5 Magnitude Earthquake Off the Coast of Alabama

News 5 first heard from a man on Dauphin Island who says his home, which on on pilings, swayed back and forth for at least five seconds.
We also received a call from a woman in Orange Beach who also felt the shaking in her second floor condo.
We have crews on the way to Dauphin Island and Orange Beach and will have the latest information for you tonight on News 5 at 10pm.

Perdido Key Chamber Has New Leaders
Change in guard at Perdido Key Chamber
As 2011 begins, the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce has a change in guard. Alison Davenport has been elected chairwoman of the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce, replacing outgoing 2010 chairman, Fred Garth. Peter King, has been elected as vice chairman of the chamber.
Davenport said the chamber will sponsor two events that debuted in 2010 — The Perdido Key Wine & Arts Festival in the spring, and Oktoberfest in fall at Villagio on Perdido Key. The chamber has appointed Lauren Turner as the events coordinator for these and all new events for 2011. This year, the chamber has debuted a new event with the Snowbird Roost in January and again in February at the Perdido Bay Community Center in Pensacola.
“All of these events tie into our goal to increase our membership by 25 percent this year,” Davenport said. “We are committed to creating great value and service to our members. In so doing, we will create a need for businesses to join and enjoy the many benefits of being a Perdido Key Chamber Member.” In addition to events, the chamber will present its quarterly business luncheons at various locations in 2011.
Happy Harbor Flora-Bama to open
Happy Harbor Flora-Bama to open
The Flora-Bama Lounge and Package along Perdido Key Drive in Perdido Key will have a new neighbor in 2011 when Happy Harbor Flora-Bama opens across the street. The building, situated along the edge of Old River separating Ono Island from Perdido Key, marks the third Happy Harbor, with a location at Orange Beach and Oyster Bay at Bon Secour, Ala.
The business is expected to provide a boost in the arm for the west end of the island, replacing what was previously a parking lot. Construction started on the new Happy Harbor began in the fall of 2010, and owner M.J. Specchio expects it to be completed and open by spring of 2011. The Happy Harbor Flora-Bama on Old River will have a restaurant, bar, marina and a parking lot that will connect to Harbor Coffee & Creamery, which is on the Alabama side. Plans also include water sport rentals, branded merchandise and boat fuel.

Perdido Key, Need to Know Beach info

Our most important advice is on how to survive the beach. After all, it’s why people come to the island, right? Follow these simple tips.
• Florida and Alabama public beach areas and state parks do not allow alcohol. A cooler’s fine, though.
Perdido Key Dog Park on River Road. The Location is 14484 River Rd. Just east of La Serena Condos (See Map Below)
• No pets on the Gulf beach in Florida and Alabama, so leave your Frisbee-catching collie at home. This goes for the state parks. Sorry, Fido.
• It’s March and maybe not quite sunbathing temperature, but even though it’s still cool, don’t let that sun fool you. You can get burned. So, check the local ultra violet index and go with a high SPF sunscreen, especially on your beak.
• The official mantra along Perdido Key is “leave your footprints.” If you need a translation: take with you what you came with when it comes to the keeping the beach clean.
• Watch out for marine life.
— Purple flag flying means dangerous marine life, which typically indicates stinging jellyfish or man of war.
— Don’t swim at dusk or at dawn.
— When you dip into the Gulf of Mexico at high noon, don’t wear shiny jewelry, avoid bright bathing suits and keep the Old Spice or Hi Karate to a minimum, bro.
• Heed the colored flags whipping in the wind. Follow it or you’ll get swept out to Honduras. Green means surf is calm; yellow means use caution; red means stay out of the water. Now, if you do get swept out, simply swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of the rip current, then swim back to shore.
More on what the flags mean.
Signs of heat exhaustion, heat stroke.
How to avoid or escape deadly rip currents
• When if comes to lifeguards, Johnson’s Beach in Perdido Key has a Florida lifeguard station, but the public access entrances do not have a lifeguard, nor does Perdido Key East or West. Romar Beach and Gulf Shores Public Beach do have lifeguard stations.
