The Gulf Restaurant at Alabama Point in Orange Beach is a new Eatery and Drinkery that is opening this weekend. This unique establishment has been crafted out of four shipping containers and is largely an open air outdoor location. Actually that’s not true it is entirely an outdoor venue…… and it is super cool!!!
New Outdoor Restaurant in Orange Beach
So the first time you see it your going to say… “What is this”…. if you haven’t already. The architecture is “Post Modern Shipping Container” and the interior well actually it’s the exterior because there really isn’t an interior per se. So the interior/exterior is laid out in a sort of a Feng shui meets Shabby Chic hipster with some picnic tables, antiques and the obligatory hammock thrown in for good measure. With seating Pods down near the water/seawall that consists of multiple outdoor couches and chairs. This establishment is really going to great links to give its patrons some of the best seats in all of Orange Beach to enjoy your favorite foods and libations.
The Masterminds behind this development are Johnny Fisher and Shaul Zislin of The Hangout and they have been burning their “creative candles” from both ends to come up with all of the different and unique aspects of this new venture. This location is actually a temporary location until the State of Alabama can repair the aging seawall structure that borders all of Alabama Point. One can only wonder what creation these two will come up with when they get to design and implement the “real thing”.
We have not had a chance to look at the menu yet but we have heard good things about the food. We are planning on treating ourselves to a visit to The Gulf this opening week and we will certainly be posting our review early next week.
During my visit today I discovered many unique features to The Gulf . The most interesting item was the antique spotlight that is mounted on the deck. I am waiting for someone to tell me its origin and its candlepower. Aside from all of the really comfy seating arrangements one of the most different aspects of The Gulf was the Sod that was installed on the upper deck and when I say sod I mean “live green grass”! What really topped that was the irrigation system that is installed to feed the sod on the upper deck. This place is a must see.
All in all The Gulf is going to be the talk of the town for some time to come and we certainly think it is worthy of such mention.
UPDATE (Early December 2012)
We recently visited The Gulf Restaurant for an afternoon sunset and wow what a spectacle it was. It was a crisp fall afternoon and the late fall sunset was spectacular, even with a few obstructions. We shared the Angus Burger as an appetizer and had cocktails. The Angus Burger (Called the Meyer Burger on the Chalkboard Menu) was unbelievable. I was ready to order another one myself so that I could satiate what those few precious bites had started. We had Cold Beers and my wife had a great glass of the Joel Gott Zinfandel. Kudos for the guys who made the wine selections. All in all we were very impressed! I look forward to rating it on urbanspoon and Google Places. So next time you’re in the Orange Beach area be sure to stop by The Gulf Restaurant at Alabama Point in Orange Beach.
