About Pensacola Beach
Pensacola Beach sits on the beautiful shores of Santa Rosa Island. Santa Rosa Island is a 40 mile long Barrier Island full of Sand Dunes, Sea Oats and Gulf of Mexico Shoreline that is truly on of the most amazing Beaches in all of the world. Santa Rosa Island was first explored in 1519 by Spanish Conquistadors and in 1559 an expedition led by Don Tristan de Luna attempted to start a settlement. Due to a series of storms, lack of supplies and some hostile “locals” the settlement was abandoned in 1561. As a result of this failed attempt St Augustine now holds the title of Florida’s Oldest City after it was first settled in 1565.
The Quietwater Beach Boardwalk has become the hub of Pensacola Beach. The boardwalk has many shops, restaurants and tons of fun things to do. Fort Pickens is also a very popular destination for history buffs and nature lovers. Fort Pickens was completed in 1834 and was a Civil War bastion for the Union army. The fort is located on the very Western tip of Santa Rosa Island and looks over Pensacola Pass. Fort Pickens was an active military installation until World War II. The fort is now open to the public as part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. There fort charges an entry fee and also rents out campsites.
